2016 BAU INSTITUTE/PUGLIA RESIDENCY FOR ARTISTS AND WRITERS
Located in the Southern Adriatic region of Italy, the Residency is a working retreat for scholars and professionals in the arts. It provides time and inspirational space to make new work, generate fresh ideas, and pursue completion of projects in progress. This singular opportunity in an ancient rural locale provides a haven for three weeks of intensive creative work. This Residency is offered to 10 Fellows from June 13 through July 4.
The Puglia Residency is located in a beautifully restored, 16th Century stone Masseria in the Salento countryside. The extensive grounds include landscaped gardens, covered terraces, oversized swimming pool, and paths for strolling or biking through hectares of centenarian olive groves. The Masseria is also a working farm, producing much of the fresh produce for our meals. A small seaside village with fresh markets and restaurants is located 1 km from the Masseria. The baroque city of Lecce is a 15-minute drive.
FACILITIES AND SERVICES
Residents live in individual private rooms and suites with AC, wi-fi, private bathrooms and twice-weekly cleaning service. The airy, white washed units each open onto terraces or covered patios and gardens. Additional buildings include a large common room and a spacious reading room with comfortable chairs and tables. Wi-fi is also available throughout the property. During the 3-week Residency, a daily full, international breakfast, and twelve gourmet dinners will be served. All on-site meals feature locally produced, regional Pugliese specialties prepared by the Masseria's "Mama Chef." Fellows take their morning and evening meals in the well-appointed communal dining room open to the Masseria’s traditional farm kitchen and large terrace. Vegetarian choices are available at all meals. BAU also prepares light weekday lunches served poolside or made-available as “brown-bag” takeaways.
Writers and artists are welcome to work throughout the extensive olive groves, flowering gardens, forested areas and varied picturesque natural grounds of the farmstead. There are no individual indoor studios for artists, however the Masseria also offers several beautiful covered loggia that provide ample, private workspace areas on flat tables and standing easels (provided by BAU). For writers, there are also several large, comfortably appointed, interior rooms with tables within the main buildings. Guided excursions to cultural sites—such as Lecce and the 9th Century walled city of Otranto—are also included. BAU’s Directors will be on-site throughout the Residency. A single trip for artist's materials and van transport for local shopping is also available.
